The demand for XR (Extended Reality) skills is constantly evolving as the technology advances. However, here are some of the most in-demand XR skills for 2023:

Top Skill — Unity: Unity is one of the most popular platforms for developing AR, VR, and XR applications, and developers who are proficient in Unity will be in high demand.

Close Second — Unreal Engine: Unreal Engine is another popular platform for XR development, and developers with expertise in Unreal Engine will also be in demand.

3. 3D modeling and animation: Developing realistic and engaging XR experiences requires advanced 3D modeling and animation skills. The two most used platforms are Maya ($225/mo) and Blender (Free).

4. Cross-platform development: As XR becomes more widespread, demand will increase for developers who can create XR applications that run on multiple platforms and devices. Tools such as Houdini and Universal Scene Design are the most in-demand skills, also requiring C++ and Python coding skills. These applications are for intermediate to advanced software engineers.

5. Human-computer interaction (HCI): XR experiences must be intuitive and easy to use, and developers with expertise in HCI will be in high demand. These skills are most credibly earned with Ph.D. programs and companies are offering roles for current Ph.D. candidates. For those interested, check out this free Udacity course:

6. ARKit and ARCore: ARKit and ARCore are the two leading AR platforms for iOS and Android, respectively. Developers who are skilled in these platforms will be in demand as AR becomes more popular. Become a member of the Apple Developer Program to get the latest betas.
NOTE: As an XR Creator, I use ARKit and ARCore for Facial Animation via LiveLink as a part of the XR-PD youtube series virtual production pipeline.

7. VR hardware development: As VR technology continues to advance, demand will increase for developers who can design and develop VR hardware, especially sensors. For those interested, here is Oculus Research’s article on Sensors for Future VR Applications.

Please note that the XR field is constantly evolving, and new skills and technologies may emerge in the future.
